The present paper is a sociolinguistic exploration of the status and attitudes towards English as it is actually used throughout Asia. In each of these areas, we see evidence of Kachru's "linguistic schizophrenia" and the conflict between ethnic nationalism and economic pragmatism.
However, we also see trends towards resolving this conflict both by promotion of local Englishes and redefinition of nationalism.
