The mayor spoke to the press Friday following an event at the National Press Club in downtown Washington. Our questions came following two high-profile juvenile crimes in the span of four days this week. On Wednesday, just after p. Three days earlier, on Sunday, February 16th, a report obtained by 7News from the Metropolitan Police Department describes a brutal attack near Union Station involving nine suspects.
According to the report, the attack happened around p. Police say suspects attacked a woman, repeatedly punching and kicking her. They also allegedly assaulted others who tried to help. Police say a suspect filmed the assaults and they were posted to social media. So far, an year-old girl and a year-old girl have been arrested.
When asked by 7News about what more can be done to stop juvenile crime, Bowser expressed frustration Friday about juveniles getting to use diversion, which is a program aimed at helping rehabilitate juveniles without prosecution and detention. They have to be charged and put in the system. But a spokesperson for D. Attorney General Brian Schwalb told 7News the office only used diversion in 8. Court spokesperson said the courts strictly follow juvenile crime statutes and sentencing guidelines and often rely on guidance from the prosecution and defense.
That source says all too often the juveniles take advantage of the decreased monitoring and commit more crimes. A spokesperson for the Department of Youth Rehabilitation Services told 7News Friday she was working on getting a response to that assertion, but likely would not be able to get it to us until Monday.
