Their rich decorations and the significance of individual panels have been subject to meta-analysis by specialists in the fields of art, architecture, and religious studies. Scenes from the life of St. Adalbert of Prague are surrounded by a border that includes numerous figures, mythical creatures, and animals with symbolic meanings.
From an anthropological perspective, particular attention is drawn to a creature on the left wing that resembles a monkey. In the literature, statements can be found suggesting that it is a monkey eating fruits, with some specifying it as a macaque. The authors decided to verify this hypothesis by considering the external appearance of the depicted figure and the accompanying plant motifs.
Morphological characteristics indicated that indeed a monkey could have been portrayed in the artwork. The depiction of the creature consuming grapes was interpreted as an attempt to recreate a frugivore. Estimating the ratio of the length of the front limbs to the hind limbs suggested a brachiator.
From an anthropological perspective, this set of features describes the gibbon family Hylobatidae. Gibbons Hylobates spp. Utilizing knowledge in anatomy, morphology, and primate behavior allows for a reexamination and enrichment of information concerning this key Polish monument of Romanesque art.
