He hauled money to Mexico from his Union City bodega which was made by shipping women to Hudson County to be sex workers. Now federal prosecutors are shipping him to jail.
Jose Luis Notario, 52, of Union City, was sentenced in federal court today to over four years in prison for his role in what U. Attorney Christopher Christie's office described as "a large-scale smuggling and trafficking ring" based in Union City. Most of the money came from the work of women as young as 17 who had been smuggled from the area of San Miguel Tenancingo to work as prostitutes in a number of brothels throughout the East Coast, according to Christie's office.
Assistant U. Attorney Leslie Schwartz, a prosecutor in the case, said that the operation smuggled at least 20 women from Mexico during its four years of operation. Notario also admitted to harboring between six and 24 people in his 42nd Street building whom he knew had no legal status in the United States. According to the statement, U. District Judge Joseph E. Irenas called Notario's building the "epicenter" of the prostitution ring, a "safe house" for several young Mexican women, all without legal status in the United States, who were shipped to Union City as sex workers.
Notario and at least a dozen other people who lived in Union City have been sentenced for their connections to the smuggling ring, which Schwartz said is just one of many in New Jersey.
