Dec 8th, , AM. I had looked at two hotels in these cities. In Schaffhausen the Rheinhotel Fischerzunft which looked very nice. When I emailed them initially, they didn't have a room suitable for the three so I booked a room in Stein am Rhine at Hotel Rheinfels. Rheinfels will give me a room with 3 beds or a suite. I just got a call yesterday from the Fischerzunft which will now have available a double room and a single room.
Question: which city would you prefer to stay in and which hotel? Thanks for the help. View Public Profile. Send a private message to cparris. Find More Posts by cparris. Find Trip Reports. My recollection of Stein-am-Rhein is that it is a jewel of painted houses, at least its central square. Schaffhausen does not have the same charm, but is much larger. Schaffhausen is primarily known for the falls, you can go take a morning or after and go see them if you want, its a 30 minute train ride between them with no changes. However, if you have seen Niagra or any really big falls, these will not impress you too much. The town won't impress you at all, esp compared to Stein am Rhein. You can take boat trips up the Rhine from Stein am Rhein as well, which are not possible to my knowledge from Schaffhausen because of the falls.
