The English Springer Spaniel is trained to find narcotics in searches of buildings, vehicles and open areas along with scanning people at transport hubs such as train stations, airports. Based in the north east of Scotland, he has been deployed across the country to assist with operations, with his efforts often regaled in high-profile court cases. It is surprising to think then that life could have been very different for PD Hamish, who joined the force as a rescue dog on 15 March The enthusiastic pup was donated to Police Scotland by a member of the public who contacted the force as they were struggling to manage him in the home environment.
Following an assessment by officers, he was deemed suitable for initial training and passed his initial Drug Licencing test with flying colours in August The force said it looks for key traits - resilience, willingness to work and a well-rounded character β when deciding what dogs will join its unit.
The animals selected must be suited to the specific role and demands of the job. He has a natural system of search and a desire to work. And how is he rewarded for his efforts?
A steak? A bubble bath? A scratch behind the ear? As a puppy and young dog he was a pleasure to train and develop.
And what is this pup wonder like when his day of crime fighting are over? He loves the water and enjoys a swim and some down time with his shift partner a German Shepherd called Luther. His handler explains that while PD Hamish has specially-made boots to assist with grip and provide protection during operations, he is prone to dispatching them.
