Specifically, she is interested in understanding how the social-ecological context of communities promotes or hinders health and health behaviors; designing and evaluating culturally grounded community-based interventions to prevent obesity and improve diet quality; and enhancing local food systems, particularly traditional food systems, to improve food security, and food sovereignty.
She has a passion for teaching medical students, residents and fellows. She has over 25 years of experience conducting community health research along the U. Her research in the past 7 years has focused on culturally tailoring cancer education for Latina mothers diagnosed with cancer.
After assessing the needs and communication patterns of Hispanic mothers diagnosed with cancer and their school age children, her team culturally adapted an evidence-based cancer parenting education program which counsels child-rearing mothers with cancer on communication and parenting strategies.
Palacios recently completed a randomized clinical trial testing the efficacy of the culturally adapted Conexiones program. More recently, Dr. Palacios is working to refine the Conexiones program for Latina mothers diagnosed with advanced cancer. Judith Owens-Manley, Ph. Her training as a social worker in policy, practice, and research and working for more than two decades as a community-level practitioner grounds her in the need for and applicability of community-level data.
She has worked with a variety of populations in community settings and with organizations on the evaluation of their programs and services. She has publications on poverty and domestic violence, refugee resettlement research, and deepening levels of community engagement.
